Daily Reprieve – A.A. for Atheists & Agnostics

Daily Reprieve

How does an alcoholic get sober in A.A. if they do not believe in God?

A.A. considers itself a spiritual Fellowship, yet God saturates the pages of the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book, the A.A. Daily Reflections meditation book, and the atmosphere of many A.A. meeting rooms. As a life-long atheist, the author shares his experience on how the Big Book can be used as a guideline for recovery. Atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, humanists and non-Christians often rush to dismiss A.A. due to all the “God stuff” and Christian language permeating the book. Do not be discouraged. Anyone and everyone can get sober and find a new way of life in A.A., regardless of their beliefs.

Daily Reprieve is divided into three parts. The Preface provides some background on the author and his experience, along with information about the content of the book. The Daily Meditation section divides the basic text of the Big Book into 365 parts, followed by a secular reflective Consideration and action-based Question for each day of the year. The last section, Various Musings, contains some of the author’s personal thoughts.

He has written five books about A.A. and had over a dozen articles published in the A.A. Grapevine magazine.
